Battle “Creative Game Design” will allow you to try your hand at game design, regardless of your level of preparation. You will have 3 hours to solve a number of tasks that will represent the real problems that the game designer encounters during the creative process of creating the game. Sergey will evaluate each work and, if desired, personally comment and discuss the pros and cons of your approach. A novice game designer will be able to get real experience and valuable advice, and participants with experience will expand their horizons and get acquainted with other people’s techniques.

The battle on technical game-design is a number of math problems within the game development area. Problems on balance calculation, counterbalance of character characteristics, calculation of game difficulty – we will work on mentioned and other similar problems. Battle shall be interesting for both – working professionals and technical universities students – having a good base they will also have a chance to win the first place.

Video games provide a unique opportunity to survive history as an active participant, not a passive viewer or reader. But if you decide to come up with and embody stories in this type of media, you will have to accept its specific laws. Battle by narrative design will test your writing skills: the ability to write accurately, concisely, unusually, given the nuances of different genres and audiences.

In our battle we’re focus on creating a realistic environment by using all possible tools. Be it manually assembled and placed models, or procedurally generated objects and shaders – the main goal will be meet the deadline. The result, apart from being cool looking on the renderer, should also be logical, live, filled with details that creates a unique atmosphere. We will work with quite specific task and references to make it a bit easier to participants. In the process Sergey will tell about problems and difficulties he encountered, and what tricks he use every day, and participants will be able to immediately apply all of it in their works.

Art Battle at Game Gathering is always not only an opportunity to win a prize, but also learn a lot of new things, get useful feedback from the Host. This time we will deal with the Fundamental Knowledge of Concept Art based on the character’s design and his weapons. We start from idea of the character, how to find interesting shapes, place accents in the right places and make it recognizable, attract attention and create flow and rhythm. The first half-hour of the Art-Battle is given a task and important information with examples and practical advices (So! Don’t be late!). Next comes the Battle itself! And finally, during the last hour, feedback will be given for each artwork. Sharpen your styluses! And may the force be with you!

Hey, guys! Running this challenge, I decided to make it as close to reality as possible. I want to provide a real working approach, me and my colleagues use to tackle our tasks. We will give the general theme for all participants, as well as supporting materials (reference boards). After the battle, as fast as I can, I am going to give a short review for every participant’s artwork, point on advantages or mistakes, and, based on my personal experience, I will give advice how to push your skill.
